Bạch Trà Mẫu Đơn (White Peony Tea) is the white tea our cooperative makes in Thai Nguyen, northern Vietnam. It uses the bud and first leaf, hand-picked in our La Bang gardens, which are then withered and dried without rolling and without firing. The result is a very pale gold cup with hay, honey and light floral notes, delicate and clean with a natural sweetness. It comes from the same gardens as our green teas, but the making is different, which gives buyers a Vietnamese white tea with a traceable origin. This guide explains how white tea is made, how ours fits beside Chinese white teas, and how to buy it.

How white tea is made
White tea goes through fewer steps than green or black tea. Green tea is fired soon after picking to stop oxidation, then rolled and dried. Black tea is rolled and fully oxidised. White tea skips both the firing and the rolling: the fresh leaf is spread out and left to wither slowly, then dried. Because the leaf is not rolled, the cells stay largely intact, so the cup is pale and gentle rather than strong.
“Mẫu Đơn” is the Vietnamese for peony, as in the White Peony (Bai Mu Dan) style known from China, which uses a bud with one or two young leaves. Our White Peony Tea follows that idea with a bud and first leaf, made from Thai Nguyen leaf rather than the large-leaf cultivars used in Fujian.
Where it fits in a range
- Tea shops and specialty retailers looking for a white tea with a Vietnamese origin to sit beside Chinese white teas.
- Hotels and fine-dining restaurants that want a light, low-astringency tea to serve after meals.
- Gift and private label brands building a premium line; see private label tea in 7 steps.
Within our own range it sits next to the green teas from the same gardens, our Nui Coc black tea and the scented jasmine tea, so one supplier can cover white, green, black and flower teas.

What to check in a sample
- Dry leaf: look for visible buds with their first leaf, whole rather than broken, with little dust.
- Aroma: hay, honey and light flowers; a smoky or musty note means a problem in drying or storage.
- Cup: pale gold and clear, with a clean, sweet finish rather than a grassy or sour one.
- Later infusions: white tea should keep giving sweetness over several infusions.
Our guide on how to request and evaluate a tea sample covers the method, and the product page gives our recommended brewing starting point.
Supply, lots and documents
White tea depends on the bud flush and on weather suitable for withering, so the quantity available is set against each season’s production rather than a fixed table. Tell us the volume and packing you need, and use our harvest calendar to plan around the spring buds. The tea is processed at our La Bang facility, which holds ISO 22000:2018 food safety management certification. For a formal export order we provide the standard document set; see export documents for Vietnamese tea. We do not describe this tea as organic.

Frequently asked questions
Is White Peony Tea from Vietnam the same as Chinese Bai Mu Dan?
It follows the same style, a bud with a young leaf, withered and dried without rolling, but it is made from Thai Nguyen leaf in our La Bang gardens, so the cup has its own character.
How is white tea different from green tea?
Green tea is fired and rolled soon after picking. White tea is not fired and not rolled; it is withered and dried, which gives a paler, gentler cup.
Can you supply it in bulk?
Yes, in bulk as well as in retail packing. Quantity is confirmed against the season’s production.
Is it organic?
We do not describe it as organic and no organic certification is claimed.
Where is it processed?
At our La Bang facility in Thai Nguyen, which holds ISO 22000:2018 food safety management certification.
