The everyday tea of northern Vietnam. Strong enough for a tea house or a canteen, honest enough to drink all day.

Description

Traditional Northern Green Tea (Tra Bac) is plucked by hand to the one-bud-two-to-three-leaf standard in the cooperative gardens at Dai Tu, Thai Nguyen province, northern Vietnam. Every TRAVINA tea is picked by hand; none of it is machine-harvested.

Traditional Northern Green Tea from TRAVINA, Thai Nguyen - dry leaf and brewed cup
Dry leaf and brewed cup

The dry leaf carries the blue-black sheen that marks good Thai Nguyen tea. In the cup it pours honey gold, with warm, lightly toasted notes on the nose; in the mouth, brisk at the front, with a gentle sweet finish.

The gardens are farmed to Six No practice. That is not the same as certified organic and TRAVINA does not claim that it is. What the cooperative does hold is VietGAP (DVCL-VG-TT-24-19-68), food safety licence 14/2025/UBND-NNMT-TNg, registered planting-area code.

  1. Warm the pot and cups with boiling water, then pour it away.
  2. Use 10 g of leaf for one standard pot. About 6 g gives a lighter cup, 12 to 15 g a strong one. One kilogram makes roughly 100 pots.
  3. Wake the leaf: cover with hot water, swirl for five seconds and pour it away.
  4. First infusion: water at about 80 to 85 C. Let boiled water stand two minutes. Steep 20 to 25 seconds.
  5. Add 10 to 15 seconds for each further infusion. Good leaf gives three to four.
